Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000031_00006]

Synopsis
Fast. That’s how I like life, especially my two great joys: bikes and women. I’m committed to exclusively riding one, but not the other. Until April. A sexy-arse freelance photographer who’s travelled the world, and doesn’t do long walks on the beach or romantic candlelit dinners. She enjoys running with the bulls and food spicy enough to make your hair fall out. If that weren’t enough to get me hard, she rides a mean mother of a motorcycle. I’ve gotta have a taste of this wildcat.
~Spencer (Jones)
I don’t do fast. Not anymore. I’ve got my career, my independence, and since I fled Spain to come back home I promised myself that I wouldn’t be put second—or third, for that matter—again. Then I meet pretty boy Spencer. He’s smooth, oozing the most potent pheromones probably known to modern science, and he’s making a move on me. One kiss was almost enough for my promise to dissolve. My head says no—my treacherous body screams yes. I’m gonna make Spencer work for it. Make him fight for the chance to have me, because I know that deep down I’m worth it.
~April MacIntyre

Prologue
SPENCER (JONES)
My head pounds, alerting me to the fact that I’m alive. Barely. I run my hand over my bare chest to find a set of fingers clad with rings. The hand tightens, sharp nails scratching my skin as they sweep over my ribs. I shudder with the realisation that she’s still here. That was not part of the plan. Her hand continues over to my hipbone, and curls around my side. I turn to see her face buried in the pillow beside me, a cascade of fiery red curls tangled down her back, a strong contrast to her pale skin. I strain to lift my head off the pillow, and there he is. Ryan. On the far edge of my king-sized bed, face down, bare arse and all. I’m here again. My life on repeat. My liver screams out its hate for me, and my body aches in silent protest. And why the fuck is my arse sore? I wriggle to release myself from her hold. I don’t like them to stay, but Ryan and I were obviously too fucked-up to care. I must’ve passed out, because normally I deal with their exit. I don’t do mornings. I don’t do awkward. I like simple hook-ups, and then “see ya”; No expectations, no complications. This here looks complicated. Walking naked across my bedroom, the floor littered with condom wrappers and clothes, I pick up a rogue black leather shoe and throw it at Ryan’s arse. He chokes on his snore, and stirs. “Hey, what the fuck, man?” He rolls over, thankfully tugging the tangled sheets with him to shield his dick. I don’t need a vision of his giant cock in the back of my head today. “What’s up is that you and Princess Redhead need to leave, buddy. I gotta get to work,” I whisper loudly. Working for Dad today is totally gonna blow. Ryan swings his legs off the bed, and stretches his arms over his head. “Well, you never fail to disappoint, man. Guess I’ll catch ya next time I’m in town.” I take a white crumpled towel that I must have left on the floor yesterday and wrap it around my hips. “That depends, mate. If you’re the reason my arse is sore, then this was the last time. Oh, and you might just get the shit kicked out of you.” He chuckles quietly to himself. “You don’t remember?” He grabs his jeans from the floor in front of him, and slips them on. “Remember what?” Oh no. Ryan did not go there. I’ll kill him. On instinct, my teeth grind against each other, and I breathe out heavily through my nose as I stalk towards him. He holds up a hand. “Relax,” he says, as he juts his chin towards the redhead. “Miss Ginger Sex Fiend over there brought toys.” “Fuck,” I gasp. I’ve seriously gotta lay off the drink. “Now, get outta here. I’ll take care of Ginger.” Ryan winks, and runs his hands through his mussed up sandy-coloured hair. Yeah. I need to get to work.

  excerpt

Chapter One Jay Marshall pressed his lips together as he held the phone. His hands curled into a ball then straightened. He stared out his bay windows overlooking the ocean. Another beautiful day on the beaches of South Florida, not that he cared. Sunshine never filled him with joy. The humidity outside suffocated the spirit, but somehow, with this deal, he'd break free. "Yes, you'll see I mean business, Mr. Danvers. My business plans are long term." Danvers sucked in his breath, as if he were doubting the sincerity of Jay's words, then told Jay. "And I'll meet your girlfriend. It's always telling with people from Miami. Flashy women and cars do not make good investments on my end." Jay gritted his teeth and tugged at his free ear, but kept the phone on the other. Miami advertised plastic women on the highway as a special brand. Flashy came with the area code. Instead he nodded his head and told the potential investor, "I understand. See you next week." He hung up the phone and stared out the window. The brightness showed his reflection and his grim frown. Jay needed to win. His eyes squished together. He¹d pay the price for success. He had no other choice. Jay's mind raced to his technical girlfriend. Eva was the epitome of flashy, beautiful, and fake. She'd been a friend since high school, and two months ago, they¹d ended up dating. On paper the award winning dramatic actress, his money, and their history should be a match. Yet he couldn't imagine his entire life videotaped. If he walked away from her, there would be no regrets. His investors hoped he had a nice, sweet woman on the side. His cousin and her friend, Penelope, flashed in his head before he dropped the thought. He pushed his hand on the glass window before he stepped back into the shadows of his office. Darkness didn¹t suit him either. Nothing stirred inside him anymore, though he craved something. Anything other than boredom from the sticky heat of his life. He shook his head and poked his head out of his office. His secretary sat there typing. "Call Eva. Set up an appointment for us to talk today." With the click of the door knob he rolled up his sleeves. He needed the deal to put his goals in line with his investment portfolio. His eyes narrowed in on the first words, long term growth. Long term read to his eyes like a rescue rope. He blinked. Life should be lived with long term goals to reach. Freedom meant change. Today, he'd break up with Eva. In his heart, he'd always hoped for a woman that tugged at his heart strings. But hopes didn't earn freedom. He'd prove to himself, and the others, John Jay Marshall came out of the game of life on top.

My Review:
Pieces of AutumnPieces of Autumn by Mara Black
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Autumn and many other people are living in an extremely desperate situation. The world has changed, and there are a lot of people struggling to survive. There is a place where girls can go and be "taken care of", but the decision to enter into a life of being someone else's property should not be made lightly. After Autumn gives in to the offer of food and shelter, she is quickly given to a man with a serious reputation. She is terrified, but finds that there may be more to this person than she expected.

I struggled with this book. I think it is too light for a dark read, and too dark for a light read. Throughout the book, Tate and others basically refer to the extreme darkness and depravity of everything, but I never quite felt it. Obviously there are some horrific things going on in this book and it is clear that a lot of people, and girls especially, are suffering at the hands of this trafficking organization. When I really consider the reasons that I didn't really connect with this book, I think it comes down to potential and execution. I felt like there were so many really interesting story lines and possibilities here and then I found myself at the end of the book still waiting. I loved the idea of a near future where a lot has changed and deteriorated, but not so long ago that people can't remember what things used to be like. I also really liked the idea of this broken damaged sadist pushed to his own limits and seeking not to be the person he was turned into for others' gain.

Autumn's situations was decidedly pretty terrible, but there were a few times when her conflict about Tate didn't really make sense based on what his words or actions were. I really liked the moments where they realized that they were taking pleasure from the same situations, and gave into their desires. Tate's character in general was really interesting and I loved seeing him fight with the person he was forced to be and try to escape the life he lead. I think overall I felt like I was told more than I was shown so I struggled to really connect with the characters since I felt like I just had to take their word for what they were talking about rather than seeing it or feeling it myself. I think someone who has not read a lot of really dark books may have a different experience of this book than I did. When I think dark read, I think DARK read. This book had a lot of dark elements, but it didn't make me feel and take me way out of my comfort zone like other books in this genre have. That said, there were a lot of interesting elements to this story and I did enjoy the way it concluded.
