All it takes is just one moment to change the course of your life. For me, it was one perfect night.

I have always had a thing for my brother’s best friend, Ben. When I found him on my parents’ couch, drowning his sorrows in a whiskey bottle, my attempts to comfort him quickly turned into a night of raw and intense passion.

My foolish heart hoped he might feel the same way I do.

But Ben wasn’t there to stay and I woke up the next morning alone with a broken heart.

I attempted to forget the guy with a smile to die for and a touch that sets me on fire.

I thought I was over him.

I thought he was gone forever.

Until, eighteen months later Ben returns and learns my secret. Now, he is hell-bent on winning me back.

He plays dirty.

And he won’t stop until he gets what he wants—me.

But he has secrets of his own.

Secrets that could destroy everything we might have and everything we are.

Josie Wright has always been a bookworm, spending every free moment with her nose buried in a book. While Josie Wright has always been a bookworm, spending every free moment with her nose buried in a book. While others were out partying, she spent her evenings with Heathcliff, Sydney Carton or Snape. Romance, fantasy, thrillers - you name it, she read it.

Thanks to the Kindle, she finally arrived in the 21St century and discovered the Indie literature world. Josie has been lost to it ever since. With her love for the written word and her promiscuous feelings for countless book boyfriends, the next logical step was to start writing. The voices in her head and her imaginary friends wanted out to play and so she wrote her debut novel "That One Night", that's to be released early summer 2015. And the good news is, there are more voices and imaginary friend where Ben and Frankie came from.

Josie is a financial expert by day and a writing junkie by night. The rest of the time she's a bit of a hippie, a bit of a goth and many things in between. Josie loves to spend time with her husband when she can tear herself away from her book boyfriends. She loves video games, movies, good food and even better music. She's addicted to chips, long baths and shoes. Oh, and books of course. Definitely books.

Unsurprisingly Complicated by Claudia Burgoa- Book Event and Review!

UC COVER

Blurb:

AJ
The lies between my parents and I came to light and now I’m working on a new life for myself. Along the way, I have my trusty superhero, Mason, to lean on when I have a hard time standing or when my crazy ex-boyfriend continues to feel he has a claim on me. Porter has trouble understanding that there hasn’t been an ‘us’ for more than three years plus all the issues he had brought upon himself. My father was right, drugs do kill. My other concern is the growing feelings I am having regarding Mason. There’s something between us I want to explore but I keep getting mixed signals. Here, I thought that after telling my parents about my lies and having their full support, things wouldn’t be as complicated as they are.

Mason My parents divorced before I even made my entrance into this world. My father has been obsessed with that love for years while my mother searches for love in all the wrong places. I don’t want a place to call home or a girl I can claim as mine. Except… Ainsley Janine –better known as ‘Nine’—has some special power that makes me question my preferences. The more I try to stay away from her, the more she pulls me closer. Exploring the possibilities of having something steady in my life isn’t a problem; it’s the long term that worries me. In addition to that, the scumbag she dated years ago keeps popping up everywhere we go. If I could use my license to kill, maybe I can stop worrying about one thing and concentrate on what to do with the green eyed girl who keeps me awake most nights.

My Review:

Unsurprisingly Complicated (Unexpected #2)Unsurprisingly Complicated by Claudia Y. Burgoa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Since Unlike Any Other AJ has moved on in her life and is attempting to move forward in healthy way. She is trying to do things that she missed out on because of the way she grew up and then the abusive relationship she was trapped in. Her ex-boyfriend has been popping up and it is clear that he is not only having some problems, but doesn't think that he and AJ are through, which they most definitely are. AJ finds her feelings for her oldest and most reliable feelings growing stronger and changing into something a lot less "friendly". Mason has always been there for AJ and cares for her more than anyone. He doesn't plan to ever have a relationship with a woman that lasts more than two hours, and that is not what he knows AJ deserves. He also doesn't want to risk their important friendship if they were to try and fail at a relationship. the problem is that he is finding it harder and harder not to give in to his attraction to her.

I really liked the first book in this series, and this one picked up right where the last book leaves us. This book, like the first in the series, focuses on people's lives in a way that allows us to really get to know the characters beyond just their attractions to one another. This book spans a good amount of time, so we really get a sense of how the characters' lives are moving forward and how they are dealing with the challenges they face. The attraction between AJ and Mason is strong and intense. Their friendship is strong and their physical chemistry is very hot. It is easy to understand why neither would want to jeopardize a relationship that has been crucial to both of them over the years, but all the same I was really hoping that they would give the "something more" a try. Things get tricky when Porter pops up again and starts becoming a problem for AJ with his lack of accountability for his past behaviors, and refusal to believe that they are over and have been for a very long time. I have enjoyed other books by this author and I will continue to read more by her in the future.

Excerpt:

“Are you sure this is okay with you? “Yes, Mason Bradley.” This is the tenth time he has asked me the question. “Did you use sex to distract me?” I clamp my lips together and refuse to answer the question. I wasn’t going to, but he gave me the perfect idea when I was desperate to make a point that his mother had to stay with me. Of course, now I’m chewing my lip because Mrs. Reality knocks me down with full force. My boyfriend’s mother is staying with me. Not just any woman—his mother. She’s going to judge me, hate me, and, what else do mothers do? “Does she know about me?” “No.” He takes his eyes off the road for a second. My hands slam against my face. “Of course she knows about you. She’s known about you since you were little, Nine.” “I don’t mean that way.” I toss my head against the seat and roll my eyes. “Girlfriend. I mean, I am your girl right?” “Oh, that detail. You are?” I groan like a wounded bear. “It’s a joke. Damn, you get feisty when you’re nervous. Take it easy. Yes, she knows and she’s aware that you and I are dating. You hold the girlfriend title, the girl who tamed me, my other half, the one who holds the key to my cell and that’s why I stick around.” I suck on my lip as I gift him with my deep, hard glare of ‘die’. “You’re not funny.” “Oh, I am.” He laughs as I burn with panic, fear, and unamused anger. My entire body is shaking at the prospect of having the woman in my house for however long she’s staying here. “How long is she staying?” I’m trying to figure out my schedule for the next few days. “She didn’t say.” A response that won’t help me with the jitters eating the insides of my stomach or with planning. Ugh, I put myself into this situation. Great. “Stop,” he orders. “I’m the only one allowed to nibble those lips. They’re mine.” He takes my hand and kisses the inside of my wrist. Then his finger caresses my skin soothing the knotted nerves. “She’s going to like you.” Not love me? My world is in danger of crumbling as I learn that winning over his mom may be a bigger challenge that I originally thought. “Oh, God!” I finally let the excruciating panic out. “What is she going to think about me?” The question comes out of my subconscious. “That we’re going too fast. I mean, you’re practically living in my house, which I love. Each day a new pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and some other item finds a spot in my closet. Scott, your sports car, lives next to Eleanor. Tucker stays at my parents’.” “Huh, you just noticed?” He kisses my hand again. “To clarify, I’m not living with you. There are a few items I have around to make things simpler when I stay overnight. That brings me to another issue. Stop naming my stuff. It’s a car, not Scott; a truck, not Tucker.” He pats the dashboard. “Ready?” he taps my nose with his free hand. “Stamp on that pretty smile of yours. That, ‘I’m about to die’ look isn’t flattering. Here they are.” Mason parks the car in front of a couple. Mr. and Mrs. Daugherty wait for us outside the terminal with their luggage. Mason’s stepfather is only a few inches taller than his wife, bald but with handsome features. “Wait here,” Mason orders. Mason’s mom is an inch or two taller than me, maybe five-seven. Porcelain skin with dark almond-shaped eyes and fine, soft features. Dark hair and a smooth complexion, just like I remember her from childhood. Due to airport restrictions, within seconds Mason shoves their luggage in the trunk and helps his mom into the car as his stepfather did not offer. “Mother, meet Ainsley Colthurst-Decker, better known as Nine or the girl I casually date.” He used the dorky jokester voice. I narrowed my eyes at him. “My lovely girlfriend. I’m not sure if you remember her. Nine, Mom.”

Book Blurb

When Lea Amelia landed her feet in San Francisco for her overseas study, her idea of freedom was simple, like eating junk food ten times a day, sitting in front of the TV in her PJs, or going out late with her friends without the need to check in with her mother constantly.

Then she met Andrew Jaya, her brothers’ best friend. A twenty-two-year-old guy whose physical appearance looked like he was crafted straight from God’s heavenly hands, but possessed a past as bleak as if it was drawn by Evil himself. A conflicted guy who wore sadness like nobody’s business beneath his mask, a perfect-looking mask she slowly peeled away.

He was also the guy who hurt her.

Suddenly, everything about her was no longer simple.

Andrew Jaya had convinced himself that not feeling was good for him. He’d been doing it splendidly for almost his entire life. But that was before his best friend’s sister stepped into his life and ruined it. After weeks of knowing Lea, all of those warm and wonderful feelings he’d long ago denied to himself started to reappear. Problem was, the brighter the light, the bigger the shadows that came with it.

His traumatic past refused to let him go.

When the unthinkable happened, the easiest thing to do was to run. But life often proves that the easiest way is usually the hardest.

excerpt

“Which one are you?”

It earned her a lazy arch of his eyebrow.

“That”—Lea nodded toward the direction of the door—“or this?” She nodded toward him.

If she thought the process of his face’s transformation at the basement was interesting, his expression now was even more fun to watch. It started with confusion, then understanding, finally a complete dickhead arrogance. “You can’t take one without the other, Lea,” he said, smiling broadly. “You have to take the bad”—he nodded toward the door, then pointed to himself—“and the good. Together.”

In that short moment, his mask was back up and running. He looked as jaw-dropping gorgeous as ever, but it made Lea feel like she was talking to that insane guy in V for Vendetta movie, the one who always wore that creepy, smiling plastic mask. Andrew leaned back in his chair, totally in his zone, and folded his arms behind his head before putting his feet on the chair next to her. His chest expanded and Lea imagined it shirtless. Darn it. The image of him in his boxers would haunt her for the rest of her life.

She dipped her chin at him and said, “I actually like the bad better.”

Baffled was what he looked right then. “Wait.” He held up a finger. “This is”—he tapped his chest, and pointed at the space between them. His eyebrows were up so high—“bad? This is me bad?”

She made a face that said yes. He made a face that said bullshit. Lea ignored him. She said, “The bad makes you look more… you.” And I like the you version better than your twin Hollywood, she wanted to add, but didn’t. She pointed at the door next. His eyes followed her hand. His forehead scrunched and his eyebrows lowered in a sharp V. “The good makes you look handsome.” Sexy and desirable too. “But not real.”

He blinked, and Lea held her breath.

His face hardened. A bit intimidating. A bit angry.

A lot angry.

Did she strike a nerve? Too judgmental? Oh, no. She was becoming her mother.

The jerky movement he did nearly made her yelp. He’d pulled his legs down, causing the chair to rattle noisily. Andrew leaned in forward with his arms crossed at the table. Lea couldn’t name the expression on his face, except it was ugly. She wouldn’t back down, though her heart drummed frantically against her ribcage. Andrew this close, and this intense, would wreck anyone’s heartbeat. She tried not to swallow excessively. His eyes stopped dead at her mouth. Feeling nervous, her hand went up to touch it, but something was there first, knocking the air out of her lungs. Completely.

Andrew was kissing her.

Kissing her. On the mouth. In his apartment. While sitting on separate wobbly chairs.

When had he moved his hand from the table to the back of her neck?

Ohmygodohmygod.

She was totally freaked out. She gripped the edge of the table with all her might.

Lea didn’t kiss him back. She had neither the will nor the time. He ended his kiss abruptly. If she couldn’t interpret the look on his face before he grabbed her face, she couldn’t even begin to guess what his look now meant. He was still close, too close, but his hand was back at the table, clenching into a fist. His breathing was heavy like he’d just spent the last minutes running. His eyes were so dark and they still stared at her mouth. She nervously licked her bottom lip. She saw a muscle jump in Andrew’s jaw.

“You like bad?” His voice low, intimidating. “This is me. Bad.”

Her eyes dropped to his mouth. He tasted wonderful. So, so him—a touch of arrogance mixed with gentleness and... sadness? Why was he sad?

Anyway, not important. This was more important.

Her first kiss.

Wait. Was it still called a kiss when she didn’t participate in the act? When there were no tongues involved or saliva exchanged? When it was that freaking short?

“Don’t,” she whispered.

“Don’t what? Don’t kiss you?” he half-barked, half-laughed. “You said you like bad.”

He turned scary and dangerous, like that one time in Japanese Garden. Lea would be lying if she said she wasn’t at least a bit afraid. For all she knew, he could suffer a double personality disorder thing, and now had turned psychotic on her.

“You don’t need to prove anything to me.”

Lea, Toto — My Lea’s theme song.

Tong Hua (also known as Fairy Tale), Guang Liang — This song is the heart and soul of the entire series. It’s a beautiful but rather sad song. I often listened to it on repeat, still do, just to get me in the mood. What does a broken fairy tale feel like? The lyrics not only speak to me about despair, bitterness, and disappointment, but also love and happiness.
