Carlisle was a gold medal winning olympic swimmer whose life was changed by a bombing that killed her lover and injured her in a way that changed her life. She doesn't date or get close to anyone because she knows something that she knows would ruin any relationship. Mateo has been attracted to Carlisle since she first walked into the class where he was the TA. He isn't relationship guy either, but when Carlisle makes it clear that she is ready to be his for a night he isn't going to pass that up for anything. Their chemistry is explosive and quickly both find themselves in a much more difficult situation than they intended.
This book is the second in the series, but could easily be read as a stand-alone. Carlisle is an interesting character and it was difficult to watch her face so many difficult questions and choices. She is strong, straight-forward, and someone I wanted to see find some happiness. Mateo is a very likable guy as well, and the chemistry between him and Carlisle is very hot. Watching them both struggle so hard with their own past traumas and current life situations was really difficult at time and very emotional. I was really hoping that both of them would find a way to be happy in their lives and relationships. One of the neat things about this book is that it is a pretty short read, but there is no shortage of character development. I noticed the same thing with the first book in this series, and that has made this author someone I will continue to seek out in the future.
