Shattered and Shaken by J. BailesMy Review:
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Allie has suffered a lot of tragedy in her 21 years. She's lost her father to cancer and her brother to war, and her heart was broken by her boyfriend. She decides it is time to try and move on with her life, and finds herself very attracted to her friend Blake. Blake is pretty perfect, but then her ex-boyfriend Wyatt returns after four years to try and set the record straight and get her back with him. Allie is faced with some tough choices, and she doesn't want to hurt any of the people she cares about, or suffer any longer herself.
I liked the plot and ideas in this story, but found some of the execution a little rough. Often, I could see what the author was working towards, but I felt like some of it was being told to me rather than me just feeling it along with the characters. I felt truly sad for some of the devastating events that Allie has had to live through and deal with. I was really hoping that she would just let herself be happy with Blake and move forward in her life. I found myself frustrated with her immaturity quite frequently. While she has had to face some very adult situations, some of her responses to different situations were pretty juvenile. When Wyatt came back into the picture, I found some of his speech a little too hyperbolic. Finding out what his side of the story was added a really interesting spin to the story line and made for some new and difficult choices for Allie that I was eager to see played out.
I know who I would pick, and who I hope Allie picks. This story ends after some pretty high drama ensues, and there are quite a few issues to be resolved. I will likely read the next in the series to see what happens.
