Tear You Apart by Megan Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
"You never know how thirsty you are until someone offers you something to drink". That quote is said early on in the book and pretty much sets the tone for the whole story. Elizabeth doesn't plan to be unfaithful. However, in real life opportunity and choices are very complex. Sometimes a feeling or experience can bring attention to a void, and that is exactly what happens to Elizabeth. As she considers what has become of her marriage of 22 years, it is difficult for her to determine exactly how or when things turned into what they are now. She knows that she hasn't been entirely happy, but in the light of re-awakened feelings and new possibilities she begins to evaluate everything. It is difficult to say if things could have turned out differently had she made different choices, but we only get one chance to see a course of events through based on our choices.
Megan Hart's books always feel like real life to me. She writes in a way that expresses just how wonderful and terrible and awkward the human condition is. Her characters are good and bad just like every person is good and bad. This book has a lot to relate to even if we ourselves might not make the same choices as the characters. It's often easy for us to look at the conflicts of others and make quick and easy judgements about what they should do. Hart makes that very difficult to do and it is one of the reasons I love her writing. She takes away the easy choice, and leaves us with all the complexities and challenges that make up the interactions we have with others and the way we live our lives. Hart makes us consider priorities and what really weighs the most when considering a life. We really see how sex can disconnect people as much as it can connect them. Elizabeth's physical existence is different in many ways due to her synesthesia. Experiencing that condition with the character brought a vividness to everything, and added a lot to the story.
I love to experience a variety of emotions while reading a book, and so far that has happened to me with many of Hart's books. Even though some of the feelings are difficult or uncomfortable, they are intense and they feel authentic. I will absolutely continue reading works by this author. Each time I pick up a book of hers, it makes me want to re-read one of her previous works that I've enjoyed. There is a feel and weight to her words that it unique to her and provides a wonderful reading experience. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for some substance with their erotic romance.
