Alex has been in love with her step-brother's best friend since she was a young teenager. For the past 8 years he has been in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He has just been released and is now holding Alex captive on an island with the intent to make her suffer and experience pain. As the person who falsely accused him of committing the crime that got him locked away and took away his future in the UFC, Alex feels she deserves everything Rafe is dishing out. She would also rather live in this hell with a man she was once obsessed with than the hell she was taken from.
This is a book for the fans of the dark stuff (non-con, dub-con, abduction, dark kink). Readers who aren't, will likely not enjoy this. I do books that make me struggle with my emotions, perceptions, and experience things that take me out of my comfort zone. Basically- I am someone who enjoys a good dark read.
When this book starts, we know some really bad stuff has been going on in Alex's life, but it takes a little while before we understand what the full story is about what happened 8 years ago. We do know that Rafe losing 8 years of his life has allowed him to unlock aspects of himself that he kept a tight hold on before his incarceration. Through all the scary stuff, he is still a character we can root for and even lust after. Alex is in an awful position, and through all the horrible experiences she has had, watching the truth surface, and seeing her and Rafe sort through some of their issues was pretty great. This story ends in a way that will make it imperative for me to get my hands on the next one. I will definitely be reading more by this author in the future.
