WALK WITH ME by Kaitlyn Stone
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Kenna Sloane leaves home as soon as she turns 18. She has endured extensive physical abuse by her step-father and once she is an adult she finds herself a new place to stay while she puts herself through college and attempts to work towards her goals for the future. Kenna may engage in some light physical relationships, but nothing where she will be at risk of having to deal with real emotions. She meets Donovan Alexander through a mutual friend, and she finds herself wanting a relationship for the first time. Donovan is a police officer who has dealt with family issues of his own. He and Kenna start to open up to one another and Kenna finds that she may really be able to trust someone and have the kind of relationship she didn't think she deserved.
Kenna has suffered some horrific abuse, and she shows a lot of strength and determination as she takes control of her life and seeks to remove herself from danger while working and putting herself through school. Donovan is a few years older than Kenna, and senses that she is guarding herself and is also inexperienced about a lot when it comest to relationships. He takes everything very slowly and shows her nothing but respect as he shows her that he is someone she can trust. Their physical chemistry is wonderful, and it is nice seeing them slowly open up to one another as their relationship deepens emotionally and sexually. These characters are both very likable. At times I felt like the dialogue between them seemed a bit hyperbolic and dramatic. That said, I did like seeing them address their concerns openly with one another and really talk through problems as they arose. Throughout the story I was really hoping that these characters would be able to make their relationship work since it was clear that they were a great match for one another.
