My Review:
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Lily accepts a summer job at Chateau Oriol working for the reclusive Mr. Darby. She finds quickly that this is not an ordinary job, and that her complete obedience and submission is required as part of her duties. Through her bizarre and difficult experience at the Chateau, Lily discovers that she has needs and desires that she never could have conceived of before. She experiences darkness and erotic pleasures that she both loves and fears.
This is a dark read. If you are not a fan of the dark stuff, this will probably not be for you. Through much of the story the consent is dubious at best. I found the story very engaging, although this wasn't one of those stories where I wanted to be the main character. It was fascinating to experience Lily's sexual awakening and see her grow and develop as a sexual being who was aware of her own preferences and desires. I was never quite sure how I felt about Edward or Charles, so I just had to try and relate to Lily's feelings. It's been a while since I've read a book that didn't shy away from what it was and turn into a light and fluffy romance despite dark beginnings. This book stayed pretty dark throughout, and I did appreciate that these characters were honest about who they are and what they wanted. It was not a story about people with dark desires suddenly having their appetites turn completely vanilla in the face of love. It was an interesting read, and I would read more by this author in the future.
