Enthrall Secrets by Vanessa Fewings- Audiobook Review

Enthrall Secrets (Within Enthrall, #2)Enthrall Secrets by Vanessa Fewings
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Story overall: 3 stars
Narration: 2.5 stars

If you have read the Enthrall series, you will likely enjoy this installment more than if you haven't. Here we get the back story for Scarlet. We get to learn about some of the formative events that lead her to be the successful dominatrix we met in the earlier books.

I did struggle to put together the images we get of Scarlet in the Enthrall series with the Scarlet we get to know here. There is a lot of whimsical decisions, and a lot of erratic behavior being exhibited by someone who is purported to be an expert in power and control

I was engaged in this story enough to want to see what happened next, and there were definitely some very touching moments. However, I found myself rolling my eyes at times at some of the hyperbolic language and instant attachments formed by these characters. The whole "I've never been this in love in my whole life" after knowing a character for less than a day thing got to be a bit much. I tried to suspend my disbelief, and just enjoy the character's relationships to one another, but it was difficult at times.

I think fans of this series will enjoy spending more time with these characters and learning more about them. I don't think that readers new to this series would be hooked by starting with this one.

For audiobook listeners:
The narration was tough for me. With audiobooks, what I really want it to become engrossed in the story and forget about the narrator. I was aware of the narrator throughout this story. Her annunciation and inflection made me constantly aware that this was being read to me and I felt that her general tone and voice didn't match what I imagined for Scarlet. Oddly, I thought her best voice work was that of Danton and then Ethan.

My Review

Trust (Night Calls, #3.5)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm sure this could be read as a stand-alone, but I really recommend reading it as part of the whole series. I love Poppy and I love Felix. I've been enjoying them since their first story Stranded, and have really enjoyed them as peripheral character in other full-length books in this series. I care about both of them, and I think that is why I have been a little disappointed in the two shorter stories they were given. Basically, I always want more.

In this story, we see Poppy and Felix still living in between Poppy's country house and Felix's city condo after they have been together for a year. Things are going great, except suddenly Felix starts lying about his whereabouts and keeping a different schedule than usual which starts raising Poppy's alarm bells. She has been betrayed in the past, and is terrified at the thought of being betrayed by someone she loves as much as she loves Felix. Through some tension and mild mystery, we come to find out what it is that is going on with Felix.

Good to read this in the context of the series, but if this is the fist book you are picking up in this series, I would recommend back tracking and starting at the beginning. I've really enjoyed this series, and will continue to read books by this author.

Unable to deny their growing attraction, they struggle to keep their distance in a relationship that requires anything but.

My Review

Piper Donovan is thrilled to land a job that will keep her living in the city she loves and prevent her from having to go back to a life she doesn't want in rural Alabama. While out celebrating her new job with friends she has a very intense encounter with a man she meets at the club. She starts her new job only to realize that the incredibly challenging frustrating man she is now the assistant to is the same man she hooked up with at the club.

Tate is an author who is very demanding and has caused a number of assistants to quit rather than work for someone like him. Piper is able to stand up to him and deal with his moods and demands- but both of them find it difficult to deal with the serious sexual chemistry between them. Both have been hurt in the past, and both struggle to decide how to handle their feelings about one another, which are growing ever more complicated.

Based on the author's description of the book, I expected to like it- but I didn't expect it to hook me so quickly or to like it as much as I did. There are elements of the story line that are familiar to this genre, but the characters felt fresh and there were many elements of the relationships that were unique. I really liked Piper and her girlfriends right from the start. They seem like a lot of fun and obviously create a good support system for each other. Tate was frustrating and screwed up a lot, but it didn't take long for him to hook me too. Piper and Tate had a lot of challenges to face- both personal and professional. Even with the serious chemistry they shared, it wasn't clear how or whether they were going to be able to sort everything out. This was a book that I had a hard time putting down. I found myself thinking about the characters and their situation when I was away from the book. Also- it is funny in a great way. A lot of books I've read lately have seemed a little too aware of how funny they are, and sometimes it seems that the author is trying to hard to be constantly hilarious and it ends up feeling a little fake. The great thing about this book was that a lot of the funny stuff caught me off guard. I would just be reading along, and then all of a sudden one of the characters would totally crack me up. It felt great to experience.  If there is anything to be critical about, I'd say that like many other books in this genre, once characters decide to be honest about their feelings for one another they get a bit hyperbolic.

This book is the second in a series, but I have not yet read the first. This book can easily be read as a stand-alone. The writing was good, and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

EXCERPT- THAT FIRST KISS

Where was his goddamn assistant? For the hundredth time, Tate Larson glanced to the door watching another suit enter and approach the counter to place his order. Checking his watch again, Tate gritted his teeth and dropped his eyes back to the screen before him. So help him God. Felix promised he had found a good one this time. He swore this was the one. Foolishly, Tate had believed the man, though why he did was beyond him. The last dozen or so certainly hadn’t worked out, so why should this one? Was it too much to ask for a person to be on time these days? Well, Felix was going to be pissed to hear that he fired this one on the spot. He didn’t tolerate incompetence well. The bell over the door chimed again, announcing another arrival. Pausing mid-sentence, his fingers hovering over the keys, Tate lifted his eyes to the door once more, pausing on the pretty little thing that stepped inside. Dressed as a professional in a nice buttercream blouse and fitted pencil skirt, he was unable to keep his eyes from wandering over her luscious curves. She wasn’t as tall or slim as the women he normally chose, but there was just something about her that drew the eye. Maybe it had something to do with the woman he had hooked up with at the club over the weekend—lush lips, curvy body and bedroom eyes. Exactly the type of woman he went for and actively avoided. He was still reliving that moment nightly, hell, daily. He never should have kissed her. It went against his personal code of never kissing a one-night stand. But kiss her he had and now he was suffering the memory of that kiss and the way the woman tasted endlessly. Glancing around, he noticed that half the men in the shop had paused what they were doing to take notice of the woman, too. He watched curiously, studying her form, the way the morning sunlight created a total body halo making her look positively heavenly, the way her eyes darted around the room nervously, landing on each man only long enough to disregard them and move on. Hmm, why only the men, he wondered as those innocent brown eyes snagged on him. Oh, hell no. Tate straightened from his slouched position and dropped his feet from the chair in front of him to the floor with a dull thud. It couldn’t be. This had to be some kind of trick. Some sick twist of fate. Two things occurred to him at once: He was looking at the object of his current fantasies—the woman he had screwed in a women’s bathroom and hadn’t been able to shake from his memory since—and he was pretty damn sure she was his new assistant. He knew she recognized him by the way her mouth dropped open in a small O and her brown eyes widened. She started toward him, her steps faltering only slightly before she visibly pulled herself together. His eyes narrowed as the woman stopped in front of his table and peered down at him. “Hey, fancy meeting you again.” She smiled, showing off pretty white teeth that weren’t exactly perfect but still managed to set off her smile. His gaze lingered on her full, pouty bottom lip, remembering how it had tasted against his tongue. “Yes, fancy that,” Tate replied tightly. “Piper was it?” Dressed the way she was, looking the way she did, he never would have figured her for the business type. Judging from their first encounter, he pegged her as easy, just some bimbo, good for taking to bed and not much more. Okay, that wasn’t entirely true. She seemed different from the women he normally screwed. Compelling him to kiss her was proof enough of that. Not that he would have minded taking this woman to bed, though. Hell, he already had her once bent over a bathroom sink, but he needed an assistant just now. What he didn’t need was the aggravation of working with a woman who he’d already slept with. Sitting back, he folded his arms over his chest and propped his foot up on the chair across from him. “Ah, you remembered.” “What can I say? I’m good with names, and I never forget a pretty face,” he replied smoothly. She blushed, which oddly pleased him. Too bad he was going to have to wipe that pretty look off her face. “So, what are you doing here?” “I’m supposed to be meeting my new assistant,” he said, looking up at her meaningfully, “but they’re late.” Brows pinching, Piper frowned at him. He knew the exact moment that she put two and two together. “You’re Tate Larson?” she screeched. He pursed his lips. “I am. Are you the assistant?” She swallowed, her hands twisting nervously in front of her. “Yes, that’s me.” “Good. You’re fired.”

My Review

Stranded (Night Calls, #1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I started reading this series backwards. I read the second in the series and liked it so much that I wanted to go back and read the first in the series. Stranded was a lot shorter and less developed than That First Kiss (Night Calls #2). If I didn't already know Felix and Poppy, I'm not sure that this book would have engaged me enough to continue with their story. I never would have guessed that this was their back story based on my understanding of them after reading That First Kiss.

Basically, I just wanted a lot more. I also didn't feel like this book helped me to understand Felix and Poppy even as much as I came to understand them when they were peripheral characters in another book. I like this author and like this series, and will be continuing on with it. I almost want to recommend that people read book #2 first since I feel that is a stronger book and will lay a foundation that will help this story along a bit.

Dirty Sexy Cuffed by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde- Release Event and Review

Dirty Sexy Cuffed by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde

Date of Publication: June 21, 2016

Synopsis

As a cop, Levi Kincaid is all about discipline and control . . .in the bedroom, and out of it, and he's always been very careful about choosing women who abide by his rules. Hot sex and intense pleasure? No problem. Emotional commitment and forever promises? No way. But he never anticipates falling for a blue eyed angel who makes him want to cuff her to his bed and do dirty, sexy things to her. And that control of his? It doesn't stand a chance against Sarah Robins, the one woman he can't resist . . .

My Review

Dirty Sexy Cuffed (Dirty Sexy, #3)Dirty Sexy Cuffed by Carly Phillips
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sarah is on the run from a crazy ex-boyfriend who is trying to get her to live in what is essentially a cult. She grew up in foster care, and hasn't had much in the way of a support system to help her get through. She is a hard worker and is trying to earn enough money to get out of the area before her ex-boyfriend finds her. Levi is a cop who has taken a liking to Sarah and has been visiting her at the gas station where she works to ask her out and also to keep an eye on her since she works in a dangerous neighborhood. Levi has a difficult past of his own and the more he gets to know about Sarah, the more he doesn't want her to leave.

If you are familiar with the other books in this series, you will know what to expect from this installment. This book can stand alone if you haven't read the others in the series. Sarah is very likable, and Levi is pretty great himself. Both have overcome a lot of adversity and it is hard not to cheer them on. Their sexual chemistry is pretty amazing and I was really hoping that they would be able to just be together. There aren't a lot of surprises in this book. It is pretty easy to guess where things are going, and it is a pretty quick read. That said, if you are looking for a steamy short read with some predictable turns- this is an enjoyable read.

Crash and Burn (Love You Like a Love Song #1) by Michelle Callahan- Review!

Synopsis
Every love story should have its own song...

A childhood promise has Chance Walker picking up a guitar once again. Sure, he's been busy growing up, finishing college, and even law school. He made a promise to his dying mother and he’s determined to keep it. While his guitar playing dreams were big when he was a kid, his skill is rusty and he hires Erin Michaelson to bring music back into his life. Not only is she incredibly talented, she's one of the sexiest women he’s ever met. It's hard to focus on correct finger position when her sweet scent threatens to drive him out of his mind.

Less than twenty-four hours after his first lesson he sees her again, but this time she’s on stage using another name and seducing an entire audience of men. He played the gentleman card once, and it got him nowhere. This time, all bets are off and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her. A single, sizzling backstage kiss will change both of their lives forever, because Chance soon realizes that Erin is not just an itch, she’s an obsession that he refuses to live without.

Erin Michaelson spends her days teaching guitar and her nights on stage as her sexy alter-ego, Eva James. Music is her dream, her passion. All she wants is to say goodbye to a lifetime of scraping by, working two jobs, and paying for past mistakes. When a major record label exec hears her band play, she gets her big break. But life can be a real bitch, and meeting Chance now is just bad timing.

Problem #1: The record label wants her to dump her band and move to L.A. Problem #2: She hadn’t counted on Chance Walker and the scorching heat of that first kiss. And last but not least is Problem #3: Is Chance really falling in love with the dull guitar teacher, or is he really just lusting after the sexy Eva James?

Will success make all of Erin's dreams come true? Or will falling in love make them both crash and burn?

My Review

Crash and Burn (Love You Like A Love Song, #1)Crash and Burn by Michele Callahan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Chance's mother passed away several months ago when her four sons receive a reminder that she would like them to follow the dreams they shared with her when they were young. This leads Chance to guitar lessons, which lead him to Erin. Erin is a talented musician who performs under her bolder alter-ego, Eva James. Chance is very attracted to Erin, but doesn't make a move on her because he is trying to act like a gentleman. After seeing her perform as Eva, he can't hold back and he makes his attraction to her clear. Erin is very attracted to Chance as well, but she isn't one to take sex casually, and she is about to embark on a career that could take her far away from Chance.

Chance and Erin are both very likable characters, and it is easy to cheer them both on throughout the story. The whole concept about the brothers receiving the letters they wrote to their mother when they were young is really touching and I liked that whole concept. I actually enjoyed a lot about this whole story. My main issue with all of it is that I would like everything more developed. I feel like we know a few things about each main character, but I feel like I would have liked to know both of them a lot better. I also would have enjoyed seeing more development in their relationship. I felt like the pacing of everything was a little too fast. I'm not opposed to the insta-attraction thing, but if I'm going to buy into insta-love, I'm going to need more of everything. That said, the chemistry between Chance and Erin was very hot and I was really hoping they would figure out how both of them could be happy. I would read more by this author in the future.

My Review:

Craving (Steel Brothers Saga Book 1)Craving by Helen Hardt
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jade was left at the altar and has gone to stay with her best friend in Colorado, where she hopes to live and work as an attorney after getting her bar exam results. She meets Talon, one of her best friend's brothers, and is very attracted to him despite his cold demeanor. Talon has been through a serious trauma in his childhood and has not dealt with it at all. He hasn't wanted to get close to anyone outside his family since he was young, but now he finds himself wanting Jade. Their chemistry is very hot, but Talon is determined not to let anyone get close to him.

My issues with this book had to to with the sometimes choppy dialogue, and the fact that I felt from the beginning that I was just being told what the story was rather than getting to experience it through the characters. That said, I was intrigued by the challenging relationship forming between Jade and Talon, and I was interested as it became clear that there were some mysterious things going on with the Steel family. Jade was a likable character, and while I would have liked for all of the characters to be a little more fully developed, I was hoping for the best for both her and Talon. There was no denying that their physical chemistry was hot, and it did seem that they could be good for one another if Talon could learn to open up. Through everything I was hoping that both of them would find happiness in one another. There is a bit of a cliff-hanger ending and I am curious to know what is going on with the Steel family, and where things will go between Jade and Talon.

Cassie was raised by extremely strict religious parents who kept her from interacting with most of the world. When she turned 18, she was terrified to find herself wearing lingerie and being auctioned off to the highest bidder. Andrei, a hitman, was working security when he saw Cassie being auctioned off and decided that he had to save her from the horrible possibilities. He buys her and decides to treat her to the life she should have had and hopes that she will be able to accept him even though he kills people for a living.

Cassie is a naive, likable character who takes the events in her life surprisingly well. Her parents are essentially villains and after the way they raised her, the whole auction should have traumatized her a lot more than it seemed to. She completely lucks out that Andrei buys her and essentially gives her a fairy tale life, minus his killing people for money. Even that starts getting a little too positive as he starts killing only very bad men. Andrei is hot and kind despite his profession, so he is pretty easy to like. The chemistry between them is hot from the start and lucky for both of them, they are quite sexually compatible. For pretty scary subject matter, this story is surprisingly pleasant and easy to digest. Despite the improbability of many of the events, I was really hoping that both of these characters would find happiness in their lives.
