Claire/Ella has had a touch childhood. Things started out okay, but revelation after revealation kept altering her life in ways that were initially emotionally challenging and then increasingly dangerous. She is saved from a incredibly dangerous situation by a man who turns out to be dangerous himself, if also intriguing and attractive. She doesn't expect to cross paths with Phillip again, but when he shows up bleeding at the door of her dorm room, she takes care of him and finds out that her life is about to change again. This is the story of a dangerous person trying to protect those he cares about in the midst of violence, and another person trying to live a normal life but finding that isn't an option for her.
This story hooked me quickly and kept me engaged throughout. These are complex characters with some very challenging decisions to make and who are living lives where decisions are made based on what will keep them alive. The physical chemistry between Ella and Phillip was strong, even though their relationship was sometimes confusing and it was tough to determine whether they would ever be able to have anything like a normal relationship with one another. There were a lot of exciting elements to this story. This is the first book I've read in this series, but I would definitely like to go back and read others after enjoying this one. I have enjoyed other books by this author and I will read more of her work in the future. 3.5 stars
