My Review:
Heights of Desire (Heightsbound, #1)Heights of Desire by Mara White
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Kate is a 42 year old happily married mother of 2 who experiences a lot of changes in her life after locking eyes with a 22 year old street kid while out with her children. Despite her love for her husband, she is drawn to Jaylee in an intense way that she is unable to ignore. Jaylee has some multi generational ties to a local gang, and his life and Kate's couldn't be farther apart in nearly every way. His attraction to her is very strong and he decides that he wants Kate to be his. Kate is not ready or willing to walk away from her family or lifestyle, but she decides that she can't stay away from Jaylee.

As you can imagine there are a ton of complex situations here, due not only to the vast differences between Kate and Jaylee, but also because Kate has so much to lose in her life if she leaves her family for Jaylee. This story definitely held my interest the whole way through, but I had real trouble connecting to Kate. She seemed very naive about some things, and I found a lot of her choices to be very odd. I found the relationship between Kate and her husband Robert to be a little confusing. I guess the point is that is became confusing and both characters were struggling. I also sometimes felt that I was being told how much Kate and Jaylee loved one another without really feeling it myself. I definitely felt their attraction at times, but never really got what was bonding them so strongly to one another. Other than every character mentioning that they could tell instantly that Jaylee was completely in love with her, I struggled to really understand it. I could definitely feel the passion and lust that happened between them, but the other stuff was a little trickier.

I also thought while it was nice for Kate to have a best friend who supported her no matter what, she was also the kind of friend who repeatedly steered Kate in bad directions. I really didn't like Kate's behaviors a lot of the time, and didn't like how many other people's lives were being affected by her back and forth declarations and keeping a lot of other people in limbo. What you can't say is that this book isn't intriguing or exciting. The story moves along, and keeps you guessing about nearly everything. I think its always a struggle for me to stay completely invested when I'm not feeling completely connected to the main character, and I couldn't quite get there with Kate.
